Artist Biography

Frank Boban investigates the spaces between life, death, and the unconscious in search of identity and purpose. He questions the facades of identity and real- ity as he explores empty tunnels and passageways, guided by an unconscious calling to discover the hidden self. Boban transcribes these conversations through photography, visually communicating his jour- ney into the abyss. The discovery of a truer sense of self reshapes his reality, exposing, as described by Baudrillard, the hyperreal in the process.

Although Boban has predominantly worked in the medium of photography, his most recent work is an installation about the symbiotic relationship between plastic pollution and people. His upcoming show in May of 2019 incorporates installation art with photography. He is very excited in pushing the boundaries of photographic display beyond the framed print.

Boban’s narratives have been compared to the photographer Duane Michals, while other work is influenced by traditional west coast photography; his compositional use of line invokes the spirit of Paul Strand. His obsession for precise compositions is influ- enced by a past career in engineering and mechanics and references the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Boban will be completing a Bachelor’s of Fine Art (BFA) in photogra- phy at San Jose State University in 2020.
