Movements of people in and around the Digital Beijing Building are reflected in the colossal surreal world of the LED facade. Images in this dreamlike virtual world are triggered by the sensory readings of people’s movements inside the building, enacted on a large interactive field and imagery display. Facade images rotate with the change of seasons, bringing a layer of interaction with nature into the work. The animation follows Chinese ink painting and dynamic linear drawing styles to give this high-tech, ultra-modern building a more humanistic and artistic face.

During the Beijing Summer Olympics of 2008, Monkey King Sun Wukong rides on a cloud overlooking Tiananmen Square and toward the Olympic Green. The New Adventures of Havoc in Heaven I is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous story in which the Monkey King wreaks havoc at a celestial party in a heavenly palace. Shown during the Olympic Games, which have been called China’s “coming-out party” and “party of the century,” it was a perfect occasion for Sun Wukong to wield his golden staff once again.
