Lance Fung Gallery presents five new American artists

F I V E,  a group show of sculptural installation works by artists Lars Chellberg, Erika Knerr, Jessica Higgins, Rob Lemon and Joshua Selman, opens Thursday, December 11th at Lance Fung Gallery.  This is the first exhibition at Lance Fung Gallery designed to introduce five important artists emerging within its community.  Fung remains committed to finding artists working with the essentials of art in unique ways. The sensibility can be traced back to his days as Director at Holly Solomon Gallery.  Since it’s inception Lance Fung Gallery, known for representing Gordon Matta-Clark, Suzanne Harris, Tristano di Robilant, John Roloff, Shigeko Kubota and Nicolas Africano, has concentrated on established artists. For Lance Fung Gallery F I V E represents an exciting new dimension added to its activities.

F I V E  is composed of mixed media work in multiple forms.  The five sculptures by Lars Chellberg, Erika Knerr, Jessica Higgins, Rob Lemon, and Joshua Selman range from the metaphysical to the anarchic and combine in a positive and energized result.  What  these five artists share is a strong awareness of how prior movements in art inform their works and a success with extending those possibilities within a direct approach.  The five sculptures emphasize essential qualities which Fung has consistently made available in the past, in ways which point to the future.

With F I V E,  Lance Fung Gallery is breaking the borders of a very strict art world and extending its ethics. The Gallery is openly sharing its belief that art is a socially interactive practice similar to architecture, and that the essentials of running an American gallery involve an exhibition program which is concretely responsive on many levels. Fung sees no conflict between quality and inclusion. Rather than substituting political essentials for the essentials of art F I V E  is designed to widen the base for Lance Fung Gallery by providing a access to relevant work in its surrounding community.
